Kelowna Family Wins Pontiac Torrent, Says One Good
2008/03/04
Congratulations to the Spence family of Kelowna and the Big White Racers! Laura Spence bought all 10 tickets for Saturday’s 2008 Pontiac Torrent Raffle. Her name was on the tickets not because she ever dreamed she’d win a car, but because the busy ski family had simply run out of time to sell them to the neighbours, as they had done in previous years. That proved to be a fortunate twist of fate. Laura got the call that her name had been drawn while out of town Saturday afternoon. “I really couldn’t believe it”, she said. “I have never won anything more than a $2 lottery ticket”. She added “right now we drive an older SUV with lots of mileage. We travel to ski races throughout the province all winter long, so we put a lot of miles on our vehicle.”

There’s no question that this family deserves to be the lucky one! Don and Laura Spence have been dedicated ski parents, volunteers and members of the Big White club for many years. Their older son, Kyle is an ex-racer and is currently coaching Alcan Nancy Greene Ski League athletes. Devon, the younger brother, is a 2nd year K2 racer who recently qualified for and competed at the K2 Western Canada Gold Cup series.

Fourteen year old Devon was so taken by his feelings of good fortune that he was inspired to give something back. After a lot of thought and little research, he and his family have decided to make a $1000.00 donation to the “Right To Play” organization. Right To Play "uses specially-designed sport and play programs to improve health, build life skills, and foster peace for children and communities affected by war, poverty and disease. Working in both the humanitarian and development contexts, Right To Play has projects in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East."

Way to go, Devon! We applaud your generous spirit - you are a true winner!
