Volunteer Opportunities Big White Racers 2005/06
The Big White Racers is a club of 95 families with 125 participants. We’re a non-profit society run by volunteers. We do, occasionally, get questions about volunteer commitments, so whether you’re new to the club or whether you’ve been around for years, the following is a review of the many ways you can volunteer for our club. For the club to be viable today and in the future it is important that all members fulfill their volunteer commitments.

Upcoming Club Activities
BBQ and Social
On the final day of Nancy Green there will be a barbeque and social. Volunteers will be needed for this. Please contact Rob Moffat to volunteer for this event.
Races
We are hosting 2 races this spring – the FIS BC Cup Final, March 18-20 and our Zone Final for our K1 and up racers April 1 & 2. It takes a large number of volunteers to prepare and run these
Races – from course work ahead of time to handing out licorice and collecting bibs and everything in-between. Many positions do not require any training or skiing ability. An email was sent to everyone recently. Sign up early to get your preferred position. Diane Entwistle will be the Volunteer Coordinator for these races – contact her at dianeandrob@shaw.ca for more information.
Dinner/Silent Auction
Also coming up will be a Dinner and Silent Auction, tentatively scheduled for April 1 on the mountain. Volunteers will be needed.
Banquet
Our year-end banquet will also need volunteers. It will be held at the Kelowna Curling Club on April 20, 2006. Tickets need to be made up and distributed soon.
Ongoing Activities
Raffle Tickets
Another reminder about those Pontiac GMC raffle tickets! Families are required to sell 1 book per child in the program up to a maximum of 2 books. Cheques are payable to the Kelowna Ski Club (not BC Alpine). Please turn in all ticket books by March 10th at the latest. All tickets need to be returned, as they need to be reconciled by BC Alpine. You may drop them off at \\\" Diamond H Tack\\\" on Kirschner Road (Mon – Sat, 9-5:30 p.m.). Please ensure your ticket book(s) has your child’s name as well as BWR written on the front.
Refundables
Big White has generously donated one of their bottle recycling bins in the Transfer Station to the Big White Racers. It is a large undertaking and Rich Deans has volunteered his time to coordinate pick-up of the bottles. Please contact him at deans@cablelan.net to help out.
Bingo
Our major fundraising source is a BC Gaming Affiliation with Bingo Kelowna. For a few volunteer hours a year at Bingo Kelowna and a few hours of paperwork, every child registered in our program is subsidized approximately $400 per year. Unfortunately, for every missed date of service we increase our chances of losing this funding by 33%. Contact for volunteering for Bingo is Shelley Jones @ 769-6509.
Fundraising Coordinator
Fundraising is a major component of the club’s operation (separate from our Bingo Affiliation) and fundraising subsidizes every member in the club by another $100. For the last couple of years no one has stepped forward to assume the Fundraising Coordinator’s position. If you feel you have the right stuff to take on this important position please come forward. If you have an idea for fundraising that you would like to make happen – let’s make it happen. Contact Joanne at jrkoepke@telus.net to help out.
Ski Swap
Every fall, the club hosts their Annual Ski Swap, another huge fundraising event that requires all hands on deck to pull it off. This one weekend event also subsidizes about $50 per racer, lowering registration fees. All members K1 and up are expected to participate at the Ski Swap thus these hours do not count towards your volunteer hours. Members with younger Nancy Green racers are encouraged to help out if possible.
Please contact any member of the executive if you have questions or suggestions about this information.
